The Province of Flevoland
A replica of the statue of Lely by Mari Andriessen, on a 35-metre-high tower of basalt blocks, designed by Hans van Houwelingen in the centre of Lelystad. Cornelis Lely (1854 – 1929) was the Dutch civil engineer who saw his plans implemented in the construction of the Zuiderzee Works, a huge project that turned the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer lake and made possible the conversion of a vast area of former seabed into dry land: the province of Flevoland, of which Lelystad is the capital.
